Mickey Fisher -- Founder Karate Shin-Toshi

Mickey Fisher has the distinction of introducing Americas' first martial art, Karate Shin-Toshi in 1963. This predates Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do by at least three years. Prior to founding this new style, Fisher trained in Chung Do Kwan, Shorin-ryu karate, Aikido, Chinese and Okinwan kenpo and Isshin-ryu, tang soo do, Hopki-Doand kung-fu. Instructors whom he trained under include Jhoon Rhee, Allen Steen, Ed Parker and Jack Hwang.

Mickey Fisher's original style was Chung Do Kwan, and he earned a first-degree black belt from Jhoon Rhee in 1962, making him the original' Karate-Kid, in that he was Americas' first teenage black belt. He has since attained advanced degrees in Moo Duk Kwon, Kenpo and several other styles. He currently holds the highest rank of 9th Degree Black Belt in Shin-Toshi Karate, which is backed-up by his equal ranking in Chung Do Kwan Tae Kwon Do.

Kwanjong Fisher is currently planning a several year writing and seminar tour of the United States, Mexico, Central and South America. He aspires to chronicle the histories and biographies of the most notable Asian martial arts pioneers.

Mike Burke -- Owner of Utah Karate Institute

Mike BurkeMike Burke the owner of Utah Karate Institute.  He is the 2nd highest ranking Shin-Toshi Karate martial artist, having attained the rank of 7th degree Black Belt in Shin-Toshi Karate.

Mr. Burke works closely with Mickey Fisher (founder of Shin-Toshi karate) to oversee the International Shin-Toshi Federation.  Mr. Burke has been practicing Shin-Toshi karate for many years and has been teaching students at his schools for more than 20 years!

Jilyn Hopkins -- Senior Instructor - Hall of Fame 2006

Jilyn HopkinsJilyn Hopkins is a Senior Instructor at Utah Karate Institute and a 4th Degree Black Belt in Shin-Toshi Karate. She has been teaching for many years and is a great asset to our schools.

Ms. Hopkins was inducted into the Utah Karate Institute Hall of Fame in 2006.

 

John Newhall Jr. -- Senior Instructor - Hall of Fame 2006

John NewhallJohn Newhall Jr. is a Senior Instructor at Utah Karate Institute and a 4th Degree Black Belt in Shin-Toshi Karate. He has been teaching for many years and is a great asset to our schools.

Mr. Newhall was inducted into the Utah Karate Institute Hall of Fame in 2006.

 

James Corbett -- Senior Instructor

James CorbettJames Corbett began his first martial arts program at the age of nine. The knowledge that he learned soon became an integral part of his life and led him to a better understanding of himself and the world around him.

James is currently a 4th Degree Black Belt in Shin-Toshi Karate. He feels that his experience and education within the system of Shin-Toshi will have no end. Mr. Corbett continues in other states promoting Karate Shin-Toshi as well as working in law enforcement. Mr. Corbett conducts seminars at Utah Karate Institute and is currently directing UKI - Los Angeles.

Cory Fisher -- Owner/Head Instructor of UKI-Springville (Cory's Karate)

Cory Fisher is the owner and Head Instructor of Cory's Karate in Springville, Utah. She has enjoyed learning the Shin-Toshi Karate system so much that she has continued her education by opening a Shin-Toshi Karate school in her home. Cory also designs and updates this website for Karate Shin-Toshi.

Mrs. Fisher is currently a 3rd Degree Black Belt in Shin-Toshi Karate.


Russell VanLeer -- Owner/Head Instructor of UKI - Kaysville

Russell VanLeerRussell VanLeer is the Head Instructor and Owner of UKI - Kaysville.  Mr. VanLeer is a 3rd Degree Black Belt in Shin-Toshi Karate. He has been teaching for many years has a great love for the art of Shin-Toshi Karate.

 

 

Garrett Brenchley -- Head Instructor at UKI - North

Garrett BrenchleyGarrett Brenchley is one of the first students that started at UKI - North.  He deserves much of the credit for the continued growth and talent that is demonstrated at UKI- North.  Mr. Brenchley is currently a 3rd Degree Black Belt in Shin-Toshi Karate.

 

 

Jim Loynd -- Owner/Head Instructor of UKI-Aritei


Jim Loynd is the owner and Head Instructor of UKI-Aritei: Aritei school of Martial Arts.

Mr. Loynd is currently a 2nd Degree Black Belt in Shin-Toshi Karate.

 


Laura Duffy -- Owner/Head Instructor of UKI-Erving


Laura Duffy is the owner and Head Instructor of UKI-Erving.

Mrs. Duffy is currently a 1st Degree Black Belt in Shin-Toshi Karate.

 


Caleb Collier -- Co-owner/Head Instructor of UKI-Fighting Brothers


Caleb Collier is the co-owner and Head Instructor of UKI-Fighting Brothers (Fighting Brothers Karate). Mr. Collier voiced a desire to teach after earning his brown belt and enjoys teaching at UKI-Fighting Brothers. He is a student at Weber State University studying Manufacturing Engineering. Mr. Collier loves to teach Karate, lift weights and play video games.

Mr. Collier is currently a 1st Degree Black Belt in Shin-Toshi Karate.

Reuben Collier -- Co-owner/Head Instructor of UKI-Fighting Brothers


Reuben Collier is the co-owner and Head Instructor of UKI-Fighting Brothers (Fighting Brothers Karate). Reuben enjoys teaching and is always inventing new activities to help students learn. Reuben loves the outdoors. He loves to hike, camp, fish and hunt. Reuben loves a challenge and karate has provided many challenges for him.

Mr. Collier is currently a 1st Degree Black Belt in Shin-Toshi Karate.

Mr. Fisher is the founder of Shin-Toshi Karate and is currently a 9th Degree Black Belt in Shin-Toshi Karate.

 

Robyn Silverstein -- Tai Chi Chuan Instructor at Utah Karate

Robyn SilversteinRobyn Silverstein studied Tai Chi Chuan for many years under the direction of the famous Grand Master Choy Kam Man, in Chinatown, San Francisco. She was the first non-Chinese student to study with Master Choy beginning in 1966 and continued, thereafter as a private student.

Robyn has taught the Southern Praying Mantis form in Utah since 1981.
